Tony Gonzalez is recently retired from Norman North High School where he spent seventeen years producing a choral program that gained state, regional, and national acclaim. The combined choirs earned the coveted State Sweepstakes Award a record 17 consecutive years. They won prestigious national festivals in Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, Chicago, Washington, D.C., NYC, Orlando, and San Diego. His ensembles performed for state, regional and national conventions of OMEA (a record ten appearances), OCDA, SWACDA (Kansas City-2008, Little Rock-2014) and ACDA (NYC-2003, Miami-2007, and OKC-2009). His Chorale has been broadcast nationally on 271 radio stations on NPR’s From the Top. His Mostly Mozart Concerts have been hailed as a staple part of the Norman community.

He has served as adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the Southwest. He has been voted to Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers. He was honored in 2003 by the National Music Educators Association in its national magazine, Teaching Music, as one of the outstanding music educators in the country. He is the 2005 and 2006 recipient of the State and Regional Music Educator of the Year award for the National Federation of High Schools. In 2007 he was named the NFHS Music Educator of the Year. In 2008 OMEA honored him as Exemplary Teacher for his life-long work in music education. He has been honored twice by the Norman Chamber of Commerce for his artistic contributions to the cultural life of the community. He was recently named the 2015 recipient of the OCDA Director of Distinction Award.

Tony has served as President of the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association, SWACDA R&S High School Chair, and OCDA R&S Jazz Chair. Tony has held high school teaching positions in Texas. He is former Director of Choral Activities at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, OK. He was conductor of the Norman Community Choral Society and the Oklahoma Vocal Arts Ensemble. He is currently SWACDA President-Elect.

Tony’s career as a voice teacher has had impressive results as well. His high school students have scored highest honors over the past decades at state and regional competitions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Many of them furthered their careers as performers and teachers. He has lectured at Boston Conservatory on voice pedagogy and the role it plays in the systematic training of young voices.

A native of Brownsville, Texas, Tony attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he studied with Ron Shirey. He earned his B.M.E. degree at Texas A & I University in Kingsville. He received a M.M.E. degree from the University of Oklahoma and has completed course work toward his D.M.A. degree in Choral Conducting. His studies at the University of Oklahoma included work with Dr. B. R. Henson and Dr. Bruce Govich. Additional studies also included Julius Herford, Simon Carrington and Jerry McCoy.

His wealth of experience as a conductor, classroom teacher and voice teacher is central to his work. His calling as a teacher was always grounded solidly in establishing and pursuing the highest musical ideals through a passionate love for the arts and his students.
